Probate is estate administration and deals with assets and liabilities of an estate and executing the will in accordance with the instructions of the deceased. If the deceased has passed away without making a will, then their estate will need to be distributed in accordance with the rules of intestacy.

In order for a distribution of the estate, the executors named in the will may have to apply for a grant of probate or if the person who passed away had not made a will, then the next of kin may need to apply for what you call letters of administration.
